IMPORTANT Poll

I have a very important (to me) question for all of you parents.

How old were your children when they got their first haircut (including at-home trims)?

I had less hair than Nicknack, so I wasn't expecting him to look so shaggy at thirteen months. I was hoping to put off his first haircut until he was at least two. Last week someone called him a "she" and Penn has been not-so-subtly hinting about a haircut ever since. Although his parents and mine agree that, although he does look a little unkempt, we should put it off as long as possible (because we all like to live under the delusion that he is still an itsy bitsy baby).

When his hair is wet the mullet in the back is shoulder length! And his bangs are just starting to get in his eyes. I like to brush it off to the side in a style my husband fondly calls "young Republican." But lately it's looking a little "young Donald Trump."

These photos (which were taken a couple of days ago) are to show you the quantity of hair he has so you have all the facts you need to formulate your opinion.

Yes, he is still wearing pajamas at noon. At least he's eating salad. Although, in the interest of full disclosure, I feel compelled to admit that after the salad he consumed something that rhymes with Bef Choyardee. Shameful? Probably. But it's one of the few foods he actually eats, rather than nibbles. I'm desperate, my friends.

He loves the baby in the mirror. I have no idea if he knows the true identity of that baby. If so, his self esteem seems to be quite healthy, as he likes to kiss the reflection.

Thanks in advance for your help on this most important dilemma!

KITTY! He is so adorable! I am digging the "Young Republican" hair-do! Although there is nothing worse than hearing "She is so cute!" when "she" is dressed in blue or green or gray...ummm yeah. Sooo, I cut my boy's hair for sure by one year. By the time they were two they were regulars at the Barber Shop! BEWARE: it does make their look so "BIG BOY" so if you aren't ready, hold off! Although, he is going to grow up girl! Don't fight it, embrace it! (WINK WINK!)

Neither of my kids had much hair at 12 months, but I know lots of friends that made it to that milestone then had first haircut. They look so big then...

Let us know what you decide. I would say, if you are happy then NO RUSH. You may have already learned that time flies...

Keep him a baby as long as you can. My two cents worth!

Mine had his first hair cut just before his first birthday. His hair started growing into these lovely blonde ringlets and covered the tops of his ears. My husband thought it was definitely time.

Given the summer heat in June we went ahead and did the boy cut thing and he ended up with a crew cut. The clippers made him giggle. Overall a positive experience. I usually wait as long as possible before doing it though. :)

Kayla first got a trim right before her first birthday. Her hair grows forward and the bangs were starting to get too long and almost to her eyes. I would brush it back, sweep it to the side, put in hair clips, all to no avail (her hair is so thin and fine the clips don't stay in for long). So I got it trimmed. I say if it doesn't bother you that it's a little longish then let it be, but if it's starting to get to be a pain in the butt (ie the longer bangs in the face) then just get a little trim!

I say get you could get it trimmed, but tell the cutter NOT A BIG BOY CUT, just a trim! No clippers!

The first time they use clippers you should prepare for lots of tears (by you, not him).

After my youngest had a few trims, I made the mistake of letting my husband take him for a trim and he brought him back to me with big boy hair. It was truly a tragedy.

He is so cute I just want to kiss those little cheeks (my youngest has lost his little chubby baby cheeks)
Ok back to your question - my oldest did not have much hair even at 2 yrs old however my youngest was like knicknack. I got his haircut at one - to prevent the mullet look. I agree with an earlier post though to ask the hairstylist to just trim it and to not give him the big boy haircut.
Bless you sweet siesta he is growing up!

Kitty, I'll say it again - he is a living doll. I don't blame him for wanting to kiss his reflection.
I hate to admit it but I let Jacob's hair get down to his collar before I was willing to get it cut. He was 17 months old. I just couldn't make myself face the "big boy" cut. Even when I did get it cut I took him to my hairdresser for the first cut.
Good luck with it.
Personally, I think you could wait a bit longer. He's just gorgeous!

My oldest son had curls that I could not bear to cut until they started to uncurl around 14 months.

My second son has a funny shaped head and hair that grows in a crazy pattern. He was probably about nine months when he got his first cut.

Be sure you find a good stylist. They are not all equally gifted in dealing with wiggly children. Haircuts can tickle for kids with sensory issues. (This is both of my boys.) My oldest son was nine before he stopped twisting and scrunching in the barber chair.

He has got to be the cutest little guy ever and I love his hair. If it were me, I would let it be. I agree with Alana - no big boy hair cut yet!!!
Thanks for the sweet comments on my blog - you are just so kind - no wonder I find so much joy in blogging!

As a mom of 3 who were mainly BALD for most of their lives, I had to trim all their "bangs" to keep them out of their eyes and to keep the food out. My hair dresser always told me to save my money, and while they were sleeping just lift up their hair and nip the ends just like you would their nails. I did this will all of mine and it made their hair fill out (which is obviously not a problem for you) but it kept me from facing "big boy/girl" hair before I was ready.

That's my suggestion. Best of luck with that sweet little one.

awwwwwwww Kitty he is such an adorable little man and gee my boys are men now but I wanted to keep them a wee bit longer in that stage and I do remember my oldest was called a girl he not only had the mop of hair but very curly,I say no rush but in the end it is up to mommy and daddy have an awesome day Kitty(hugs from the Island):0)

Oh, who cares if people think he is a girl because his hair is long! I LOVE his hair. I vote to leave it. You'll know when the time is right, even if it is just for a little trim. I'll post a pic of my "baby" as looks right now. It will help you see why I feel as I do! I'll give you a holler when I post it :)

Lily was about 12 months, I think. Her bangs were getting so long and in her eyes, but she wouldn't let me pull them back. So we got them trimmed as well as the back so it didn't look so mullet-like. She's 15 months now and is probably getting close to needing another bang trim. You've got quite a cutie!

Well, I don't think I'll be much help at all because I have 2 girls who were born with tons of hair. Although, I think he looks adorable and not girl-y at all. Isn't it sort of stylish for boys to have longish hair these days?!

Just read your post and saw the pictures. What a cutie!!! As the mother of three blondies, whos hair did not come in thick until they were older, do what you want with his hair. You are the Mom and you know best. I did get a short trim (uneven ends) when the boys were about 1 year old. My daughter's hair I let grow. . guess I reinforced the gender stereotypes, huh? Seriously, Nick is gorgeous. Do what feels right for you!!

Yeah for you winning the free book from Amanda at Baby Bangs! How fun to see your name on her post.

Happy 4th!

Great question. I *always* lament and hem & haw about this decision and then I *always* feel like they look older and I *always* look at pictures from before the haircut and think, "why did I wait soooo long!"

So.....I think yes, a sweet but very conservative "first" cut will look absolutely precious on your adorable boy.

I agree with the clipper comment. NO buzz cuts yet.

My oldest son was 6 months old when we gave him a buzz cut. He came out with a top full of hair! My second son who is almost 14 months still doesn't have enough hair to really cut. I say whatever makes you happiest! once it's gone the baby hair is gone and although the hair grows back ... it's never babyish again :) Do what you will be happy with!
